Student selection

What happens after the application period?

Once the application period has closed, the higher education institutions start processing the applications. Only eligible candidates who have submitted all the required documents within the set application period are taken into consideration in the student selection process.

Due to the large amount of incoming applications, the selection process may take some time – please be patient! You can find information on the student selection timetables on the admissions websites.

If you have applied to Bachelor’s level studies, or certain Master’s programmes, you may need to take part in an entrance examination before the final decisions are made.

A competitive process

There are only a limited number of study placements available annually within any given degree programme. Therefore, the procedure of student selection can be quite competitive, and sometimes even a good candidate may eventually find that he or she is not among those admitted. This however should not discourage you from applying, it’s just something that every applicant should perhaps be aware of.

If you are accepted

The institutions will eventually send out letters of acceptance to those who have been admitted. Remember to confirm your study placement to the receiving institution, if this is required. Then you can start organising the practical issues of your student life in Finland (residence permit, accommodation, etc). Please refer to the ‘Living in Finland’ section of this site for more information.

Very important: once you have received your official letter of acceptance from your hosting Finnish university or polytechnic (UAS), please start the application procedure for your student residence permit as soon as possible.
