Stories Andrei

“Thanks to the flexibility of the Finnish education system, I was able to finish school one year earlier and start studying immediately.”

Andrei, Romania, Bachelor’s Degree Programme, Linguistics.

Andrei’s mother tongue is Romanian. He grew up in Romania and came to Finland with his family in the year 2000. His father has been working as a university lecturer ever since and brought his wife, his two sons – one of them Andrei – with him. The family stayed for one year, went back to Romania and returned in 2003, intending to stay here permanently.

Andrei is crazy about languages. In addition to his mother tongue he speaks six of them: English, French, Spanish, Swedish, Esperanto and of course Finnish.

He went to an international college in Tampere, finished school, and – already at the age of 17 – started to study Linguistics with Language Technology as a minor at the University of Helsinki.

“Thanks to the flexibility of the Finnish education system, I was able to finish school one year earlier and start studying immediately.” Andrei is very confident with the content of his studies and the opportunities and choices he has at the University of Helsinki.

“The infrastructure at the university concerning library stocks, courses and lectures is excellent.” Andrei wants to continue his studies after the bachelor’s degree and definitely graduate in the master’s programme.

When he arrived in Finland, Romania was not yet fully part of the European Union. Andrei had to deal with the Finnish authorities more intensively compared with other students coming from European Union countries. He describes the procedure as supportive and reliable.

“There was a lot of paperwork that had to be done, but in the end everything worked out fine and without any bigger problems. The clerks were always very helpful and polite.”
